How to connect ChatGPT to Runway Dev

Connecting ChatGPT to Runway Dev MCP lets you ask about your own account in conversation: which models your project can call and what they cost, how many credits you have left, what your Model Routers are set to, and why a particular generation failed. It answers from your live account rather than from what it remembers about the platform.

It does not build your integration. ChatGPT runs in OpenAI’s cloud and does not work inside your codebase, so for writing the integration itself use Codex, which connects to the same server and does work in your project. Use Codex to build, and ChatGPT to ask.

ChatGPT or Codex: which one for what

ChatGPT Codex
Reads your Runway Dev account Yes Yes
Writes the integration in your codebase No Yes
Creates Model Routers and Characters Yes, with a confirmation Yes, with a confirmation
How it connects Custom connector in settings CLI, config file or the Codex app

Step 1: Turn on developer mode

Custom connectors sit behind developer mode in ChatGPT, so turn it on first, in Settings. OpenAI documents the current path in developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT. Accept the warning that custom connectors run third-party code on your behalf.

If you do not see the option at all, you are probably on a managed workspace where an admin has to allow custom connectors first, or on a plan that does not include them. Free ChatGPT does not.

Step 2: Add Runway Dev as a custom connector

Add a new custom connector and point it at the Runway Dev MCP server:

https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp

Give it a name and a description, and choose OAuth as the authentication method. Runway Dev MCP authenticates with OAuth in the browser, so no API key goes into the connector. Complete the sign-in yourself when the browser opens.

The description is worth writing carefully rather than leaving blank: ChatGPT reads it when deciding whether to reach for the connector at all.

Step 3: Use it in a conversation

Start a new chat, open the composer menu, and select the Runway Dev connector. ChatGPT discovers the server’s tools and can then answer from your account. Anything that would change your account surfaces a confirmation before it runs.

Confirm it worked. Ask who you are and how many credits you have. It should return the email on your Runway Dev account and your current balance.

What to ask it

  • Which models can this project call, and what does each one cost?
  • How many credits do I have left?
  • What is this Model Router set to optimize for, and which models are eligible?
  • Why did my last generation fail?
  • Which model ran for that request, and why did the router pick it?

When the answer turns into work, hand it to Codex. It connects to the same server and writes the integration in your codebase.

Connect Runway Dev MCP and ask it what your project can call. Create an account to start building.

FAQ

Can I connect ChatGPT to Runway Dev?

Yes. Add Runway Dev MCP as a custom connector pointed at https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp, with OAuth as the authentication method. ChatGPT can then answer from your live Runway Dev account: models, prices, credits, router configuration and failed tasks.

What is the Runway Dev MCP server URL for ChatGPT?

https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp. It is the same URL in every client.

Can ChatGPT build a generative media integration for me?

No. ChatGPT runs in OpenAI’s cloud and does not work inside your codebase. Use Codex for building, which connects to the same Runway Dev MCP server and can write and update the integration in your project.

Why can’t I add a custom connector in ChatGPT?

Usually one of two reasons: custom connectors require developer mode, which is off by default, or you are on a managed workspace where an admin has to permit custom connectors first. Free ChatGPT does not support them.

Do I need a Runway API key to connect ChatGPT?

No. Runway Dev MCP authenticates with OAuth in the browser, so no key goes into the connector. You only need RUNWAYML_API_SECRET when your own application makes live generation calls.

What can I ask ChatGPT once Runway Dev is connected?

Which models your project can call and what they cost, your credit balance, what a Model Router is set to and which models are eligible, why a generation failed, and which model ran for a given request.

Is this the same as the Runway Media MCP?

No. Runway Dev MCP, at dev.runwayml.com/mcp, connects an agent to your Runway Dev account so it can plan, configure and debug an integration. Runway Media MCP, at mcp.runwayml.com, generates media inside a chat.

Can ChatGPT change my Runway Dev account?

It can create and manage configurations such as Model Routers and Characters, and anything that changes your account surfaces a confirmation before it runs. You complete the OAuth sign-in yourself.

Does Runway Dev MCP work with other coding agents?

Yes. It is a standard remote MCP server, so any client that supports remote MCP servers connects to the same URL. Setup is documented for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex and Cursor.
